Overview

This graduate school not only allows you to more widely and deeply master the specialties developed in the faculty education, thereby improving the wisdom, gaining the insight into authentication, and contributing to the development in research and education, but also aims to cultivate the human resources who form the core of globalized society.

The Division of Japanese Language & Literature is not called that of National Language and Literature anymore, because we consider that Japan is a part of the world. In the field of Japanese linguistics, by analyzing and making research for Japanese language historically and structurally, we aim to clarify its characteristics and structure. In the research on Japanese literature, moreover, by studying the cultures and literary works in various periods in history, and also researching the relevant societies, authors, and others, we clarify the characteristics of Japanese literature.

Furthermore, this graduate school has a Japanese-language curriculum of cultivate the Japanese-language teachers for foreigners, thereby aiming to cultivate advanced specialists in order to satisfy the foreigners’ willingness to study Japanese language in the globalized society.

The Division of English Language & Literature deepens study in the fields represented in the Department of English Language & Literature in the Faculty of Letters. In the present world, where English functions as a global language, understanding international cultures, especially the cultures of the English-speaking world, is indispensable. Thus, our three traditional fields of English linguistics, British literature, and American literature, while maintaining their significance as special research areas, take on new significance as gateway into the globalized societies of the 21st century.

Another field available for study in our Division of English language education aims at cultivating advanced specialists in English-language teaching and providing well-qualified teachers of the future as well as rich in-service opportunities for current teachers. The Division seeks to contribute to communities both local and global not only by fostering advanced knowledge and research skills in our students studying in these fields, but also through various outreach initiatives.

Admission Policy

Philosophy of the Graduate School of Language & Literature

The Graduate School of Language & Literature aims to encourage students to seek the way to put their academic achievements in modern society where diverse values coexist. Particularly by developing their specialist capabilities achieved through the undergraduate courses, we seek to broaden their profound academic knowledge with a broad perspective by way of contributing to research and education.

As a local hub for research on language, literature, and Japanese language education, the Division of Japanese Language & Literature aim to train students acquire skills and knowledge on Japanese Linguistics, Japanese Literature, and Japanese Language Education deploying the perspective of the comparative study between Japan and China, anticipating a role as a research base on language and culture and Japanese language education in community. We strive to train students to set and solve academic issues on their own.

The Division of English Language & Literature aims to train students to develop their specialist capabilities on English Linguistics, British Literature, American Literature, and English Language Education, to develop their understanding of different cultures, and improve their research levels. We strive to train students to acquire knowledge and skills in British and American Language and Culture, and English Language Education through their course work.

Based on these perspectives, our Graduate School seeks individuals who have knowledge and motivation as below.

1 Master’s Degree Program (Japanese Language & Literature)

To achieve our goals, we shall offer those who meet the requisites below:

  1. (1)Those who demonstrate the academic competence equivalent to bachelor’s degree.
  2. (2)Those who aim to be Japanese teachers, Japanese language teachers, or take relevant highly professional jobs.
  3. (3)Those who aim to go on to a doctorate degree program or be academic scholars and researchers.
  4. (4)Those who have a strong academic interest in language, literature, and culture to advance their undergraduate academic accomplishments.
  5. (5)Adults with full-time or part-time jobs who try to acquire specialized knowledge in a higher education institution, making good use of the various experiences.

2 Master’s Degree Program (English Language & Literature)

To achieve our goals, we shall offer those who meet the requisites below:

  1. (1)Those who demonstrate the academic competence equivalent to bachelor’s degree.
  2. (2)Those who aim to be English teachers, translators, and or take relevant highly professional jobs.
  3. (3)Those who aim to go on to a doctoral degree program or be academic scholars and researchers.
  4. (4)Those who have a strong academic interest in language, literature, and culture to advance their undergraduate academic accomplishments.
  5. (5)Adults with full-time or part-time jobs who try to acquire specialized knowledge in a higher education institution, making good use of the various experiences.

3 Doctorate Degree Program (Japanese Language & Literature)

To achieve our goals, we shall offer those who meet the requisites below:

  1. (1)Those who demonstrate the academic competence equivalent to master’s degree.
  2. (2)Those who seek to play leading roles in the fields of Japanese Linguistics, Japanese Language Education, and Japanese Literature at universities or colleges.
  3. (3)Those who aim to be skilled professionals in educational institutions or relevant institutions.
  4. (4)Teachers or professionals who aim at the further development of their professional knowledge and skills.

4 Doctorate Degree Program (English Language & Literature)

  1. (1)Those who demonstrate the academic competence equivalent to master’s degree.
  2. (2)Those who seek to play leading roles in the fields of English Language Education, English Linguistics, British and American Literatures at universities or colleges.
  3. (3)Those who aim to be skilled professionals who have excellent judgment and can meet various social needs in educational institutions or relevant institutions.
  4. (4)Those who aim at the further development of their professional knowledge and skills.

Based on the criteria listed above, we accept highly motivated individuals using the following methods.

【 Master’s course: Japanese Language & Literature 】

Knowledge of the basic course requirements, motivation for research, ways of planning, and prospects for the future, students will be comprehensively evaluated by written exams and interviews.

In the case of special selection of experienced applicants and seniors, evaluation is by oral exam only.

【 Doctorate course: Japanese Language & Literature 】

We evaluate students by written exams, submitted documents, and oral exams to check their academic ability for the graduate course, research performance, ways of planning, presentation skill.

【 Master’s course: English Language & Literature 】

English skills, knowledge of the basic course requirements, motivation for research, ways of planning, and prospects for the future, students will be comprehensively evaluated by written exams, interviews, and oral exams.

【 Doctorate course: English Language & Literature 】

English skills, discernment for the graduate course, motivation for research, research performance, ways of planning, and prospects for the future, students will be comprehensively evaluated by written exams, submitted documents, and oral exams.
