In the graduate school, we confer a degree on students who earn the specified credits, achieve the following goals through attending classes, writing a thesis, research presentation, etc.

Those who discover a theme with future potential, and can conduct such investigations and researches as reach the level of an academic conference

Those who can make an oral and written presentation logically and analytically

Those who can have a clear vision about their careers and researches

Those who can conduct researches with originality and novelty, as compared with advance researches

Those who can conduct logical and analytic researches with high academic value

Those who can send their research achievements effectively by an oral presentation in an academic conference, the publication of a treatise, and other means

Our graduate school, based on its educational philosophy, shall organize and implement its curriculum in accordance with the following policy.

The goal of our master’s degree program is to train students to be academic scholars or to develop students with specialist capabilities by advancing their undergraduate academic accomplishments and imparting profound academic knowledge with a broad perspective.

(Division of Japanese Language & Literature)

• 1. To achieve our goals, we shall offer Special Lectures and Special Seminars along with the following aspects.
  1. (1) The lectures and seminars in Japanese linguistics are aimed to acquire skills and knowledge on topics “Theory and Method of Research on Grammar, ” “Observation and Analysis of Aspects of Modern Japanese, ” “Observation and Analysis of Japanese in Literature-Based Materials, ” and “Japanese Language Pedagogy. “
  2. (2) Those in Japanese literature are aimed to acquire skills and knowledge on the critical analysis of works covering ancient to modern Japanese literature.
  3. (3) The rest of the lectures and seminars such as “Comparative Literature in Japanese and Chinese” are aimed to develop abilities to take interdisciplinary and integrated approaches.
• 2. To achieve their higher goals, students are offered opportunities for research presentations under the following program guidelines.

  In the first year, students are expected to take courses not only in their own research interests but also in the related fields in order to develop their abilities to analyze their research topics from broader points of views.
  In the second year, students are expected to take courses in their own research interests in order to develop their abilities to present new academic perspectives led by thorough research and analysis in their master’s theses.

  In the first year of the program, students are expected to advance their research areas through special lectures and seminars under the guidance of supervisors. They are also expected to acquire broader knowledge by taking courses related to their research areas.
  They are encouraged to develop analytical and logical presentation skills and to explore insightful research themes.
  In the second year, students are expected to complete and submit their master’s theses under the assistance of supervisors. While being trained to conduct research at levels that reach accepted academic levels, students are expected to complete logical and analytical master’s theses.
  Throughout the two-year program, students are encouraged to form a clear vision of their future researches and future careers by receiving support from their supervisors and by sharing their views with other graduate students at on-campus conferences.

  We evaluate the academic achievement based on the evaluation criteria which is prescribed in the syllabus for both Divisions of Japanese and English Language & Literature.
  In addition, we evaluate the master’s thesis based on the screening criteria for dissertations of Graduate School of Language & Literature.

The goal of our doctorate program is to produce distinguished researchers who have practical abilities to utilize their knowledge and skills and leading professionals who have outstanding specialist capabilities.

Through Special Research courses provided by their supervisors, students are encouraged to acquire skills necessary to accurately and comprehensively analyze and interpret research materials in their fields. By doing so, they are expected to do research for their doctoral dissertations. They are trained to find research subjects that are unique and innovative, and conduct high-level academic research that is both logical and analytical. They are encouraged to present their works at on- and off-campus conferences and publish papers in academic journals through which they can obtain opportunities to contact with other scholars. All these are expected to benefit the students in their doctoral dissertations.

We evaluate the academic achievement based on the evaluation criteria which is prescribed in the syllabus for both Divisions of Japanese and English Language & Literature.
In addition, we evaluate the dissertations based on the screening criteria for dissertations of Graduate School of Language & Literature.
